intent, function, style, alignment

In design and decorating, it is easy to get caught up in a style or an image that tugs on emotions and shouts to be recreated.  This is a story that too often repeats itself; the replication of a glossy catalogue page or Instagram image because that visual has everything that is needed and wanted in the moment.  Fast forward a couple of years and this type of duplication is often met with dissatisfaction and a need to change or update again.  It creates a never ending cycle, yet if we take the time there are a few words that can guide the process and help create a space that benefits us, encourages us, and embodies us.

First, let’s look at  intent.  It is part why and part what.  It can be as simple as starting with the reason why are you in the process of creating or changing your space.  It may be  that the space or room may no longer work for its former purpose or you have just moved into a new home.  Then really think about what  you hope to achieve when the process is complete and  what you want to feel.  Are you looking for something bright and airy or snug and cozy?  It is easy to follow a formula or a trend and just get it done but slow down, take your time.  Remember we evolve as people and our spaces will evolve as well.  When we use our intention as a guide we are rewarded in the long run - a home, a space that we love and the holds meaning, not another project to be tackled in what seems like the blink of an eye.

With the beacon in place, the next component is function.  A space can look beautiful but if you have forgotten to let it operate as it really needs to, it is nearly pretty - akin to a formal sitting room that never gets used because the upholstery might get dirty.  Really think about how the space needs to behave. Does it need to work hard, does it need to serve multiple purposes, does it need to be quiet and calm?  This will help with decisions about furnishings, fabric, accessories, placement of items, storage, lighting and countless other elements.  Using the space before you jump to this stage can be invaluable. It gives you something tangible to use as the basis and it prevents assumptions from being the driving factor.

Now that you know why you are making a change and what the space ultimately needs to provide, you can infuse your style.  Architecture or geographical location may play a role here.  Use these to your advantage and experiment.  Remember, if you love something it can work and it will work in your space.  Go ahead and mix metals, textures, patterns, and colors.  Place that well loved, slightly tattered table or chair in a place of honor.  Don’t be afraid to infuse your space with a little something wabi sabi, add some soft light for little more hygge, or dress up the entry with a mirror.  As long as the pieces you combine have meaning and purpose for you, as long as they bring you joy, they speak to your style.

Together intention, function and personal style will meld to bring you into alignment with your home, your mindset, and your lifestyle.  Your home becomes authentically you it holds the beauty that will motivate and inspire you everyday.
